Chapter Five

Dominic crouched on top of the hill overlooking his palace, his birdlike talons digging into the earth beneath them. One last element was missing, then he would be able to seek his revenge on Mace. Karina seemed to feed off his sexual torture. She had not yet resisted him. When he touched her it was as if her skin burned for the touch. He couldn’t stand the thought of another man taking her but that was exactly the thing that made her valuable to him. Nothing about Karina thus far had been easy. Why should this be any different? He stalked back to the cave, his haven during the days when he turned into a griffin. All he could think of was Karina’s soft hair and his need to run his fingers through it and pull her to him. He imagined her coming to him and wondered if she had the ability to change into a dragon. How would it be between them? Sometime during his fantasy, he fell asleep. As he lay there dreaming of her a dragon appeared in his mind.

Its scales were green, covering its entire body, which was considerably smaller than his. Its bright yellow eyes narrowed at him in challenge as it bent its head forward and entered the cave. Cocking its head to the side, it let out another low growl that reverberated through the cave.

It crouched down as a tiger would before attacking. His lion instinct kicked in, making him thankful for that part of his griffin persona. He met the challenger’s stance, prepared for a confrontation.

The way its eyes narrowed at him and its tail swished back and forth made it look like a cat about to pounce. When it did spring forward he puffed out his chest, allowing his feathers to take the brunt of the attack.

Claws dug against his chest, taking with them a handful of feathers. He didn’t wince as they fell to the cave’s floor. Instead he reached out with his talons and struck the side of the dragon’s face, hoping only to knock it off balance.

“Why are you stalking me?” His voice barely sounded human coming from the lionlike mouth.

“It is my nature. Stalk that which you want.” Karina’s voice came from deep within her chest, echoing in the cave as she pounced, knocking him off balance. “Do you know what I want?”

“What do you want?” he growled as he hit the dirt floor.

“I want revenge.” Her tongue darted out and ran along the feathers on his face.

“For what?” He lay on his back looking up at her, waiting for her to make her next move.

“For what you make me feel.”

There didn’t need to be logic when it came to the hunt. Predator and prey only needed to have a desire for one another, whether it was for flesh and blood or some other purpose. He knew that he and Karina had the need but neither would admit it without their beastly disguises.

“You aren’t making sense.” He pushed against her, dislodging his wings from beneath her.
